Meditation During the Sand Mandala Construction at Gallo Center

26 Sep

I hope the following times will work for you.  If not, please feel free to go on your own at a time convenient for you.

According to the Modesto Bee,

There will be an opening ceremony Tuesday at noon at the Gallo Center plaza. Lamas will consecrate the site and call for the forces of goodness by means of music, chanting and mantra recitation.

Mandala exhibit hours are Tuesday from 12:30 to 6 p.m., Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., next Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Oct. 1 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In addition to watching the monks at work, patrons may try sand painting themselves at a separate station.

The closing ceremony on Oct. 1 at 5 p.m. is in conjunction with the International Heritage Festival and will begin in the Gallo Center lobby. The sands will be swept up, with half distributed to the audience and half taken to La Loma Park to be deposited into the river. The waters then carry the healing blessing to the ocean, and from there it spreads throughout the world for planetary healing.

I’m planning to go on Tuesday at noon for the opening ceremony – if anyone wants to join me, we could sit for a little while after the ceremony ends.  According to the survey, 4 of you said you could meet at 1pm (and 2pm) on Tuesday.  I can’t stay beyond 1:45pm.  Bring a cushion and mat if you need one.

4 of you indicated that 1pm, 2pm, and 4pm would work for you on Wednesday and Thursday (3 could make the 3pm time).

I’m planning to go on Thursday at 1pm.  If some of you want to go on Wednesday after 2pm, Reva will be working at Gallo in the lobby and I’m sure she would enjoy your presence there!

I do not know if I will be able to make the ending ceremony, but please do go if you can!  I’ll know more about my schedule by Tuesday evening and we can discuss the Thursday and Saturday times then.

Please post here if you plan to go…

Thanks,

Lori

Thursday Evening Queen Bean Social 7:00PM

28 Jul

Hi all, as evidenced by the new title we will be moving the Thursday evening social back to the Queen Bean. We tried another venue but the street noise and car exhaust was not very conducive to a pleasant evening. More people are beginning to show up so we’re hoping this really gains momentum.  See you there!

Visit to Lao Buddhist Temple

21 Jul

Visit to Lao Buddhist Temple in Ceres, CA

This is a field trip to experience a Buddhist service as is traditionally done in Laos and end up with meditating in the temple in the presence of a huge image of the Buddha.

Where: Wat Lao Buddharangsy, 3819 East Service Rd. Ceres, CA

When: 7-9 PM, Wednesday, August 3,2011

Every evening there is a prayer service from 6-7:45 PM. We can join the service from 7 PM on [It is perfectly okay to quietly come in and take our seats during the service]. At 7:45 PM I have requested that we get a brief tour of the temple. At 8 PM we will have our meditation till 9 PM. Let us honor the tradition of separate seating areas for men and women.

Seating is on the floor with a few chairs for those in need. Let me know who has to have a chair. Others may bring a cushion (but not a mat). We will meet in the parking lot at 6:55 PM. Carpooling may be self-organized. Bringing a bottle of water is okay. Modest and loose clothing is required. That means shorts and tank tops etc. are not okay!

We will be removing shoes before entering the temple, so slip on shoes are advisable. Eastern etiquette requires that we do not stretch our feet facing the Buddha or the monks. There are donation boxes for voluntary love offering. Bouaphan, a former student of mine and/or her son will be present to usher us into the temple sanctuary.

Please let me know via email or phone if interested in joining this fun trip. Email: gmurti@csustan.edu and Tel: 209-656-1931.
